Marvel and the Infinity Stones: “I Made Up All This C**** in 90 Minutes”

James Gunn reveals how he designed the mythical Infinity Stones for Marvel movies in just 1h30!

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, in which the Infinity Stones played a major role, were the culmination of Marvel’s Golden Age. If the stones already exist in the comics, their cinematic version had to be revisited to facilitate their understanding and it was James Gunn who reinvented everything in just 90 minutes!

As Espinof reports, it was during an interview for Phase Zero, during the promotion of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, that James Gunn returned to the subject. Asked about the scene in which the Collector (Benicio Del Toro) explains what the Infinity Stones are, for the first time in the MCU, in the first installment of Guardians of the Galaxy, the director reveals ā€“ bursting into laughter ā€“ that he wrote this scene in only 1h30 but that he did not expect the stones to become so important in the future of the saga.

I wrote that scene in an hour and a half, that’s just what I made up, what the Infinity Stones were, and it’s all based on that! They said to me, ‘We’re thinking of adding the power stones’ and I thought that was cool, […] and I just made up these cā€¦! This is what happened!

Last year, James Gunn already admitted he didn’t know what Marvel’s plans for Infinity War and Endgame were when he started working on Guardians of the Galaxy. While the Infinity Stones mythology seems to have been cobbled together and added to bit by bit in each film without a very definite starting plan, it all worked out in the end, bringing the MCU to its peak.

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame can be seen on Disney+, just like most MCU films.
