Marvel: how did Chris Evans get the role of Captain America?

Chris Evans wasn’t the most interested in becoming such an iconic superhero as Captain America. His own mother had to get involved!

How Chris Evans landed the role that made him one of the most “bankables” from the moment ?

When deciding who would play Steve Rogers in the first Captain America movie, producer Joel Silver is already thinking of Chris Evans. The latter had already worked with Marvel by playing the Human Torch in two films dedicated to the Fantastic Four in 2005 and 2007. Except that other producers, Kevin Feige and Stephen Broussard, want Captain America to be played by Sebastian Stan.

Finally, it is Chris Evans who is retained, except that he does not want the role. Burned by his adventure on The Fantastic Four, films which did not know the expected public and critical feedback, Evans does not want to sign a contract binding him to Marvel for several feature films, especially if they are not good and that he is legally obliged to continue.

He then calls his mother, Lisa Evans, to ask her advice. At the microphone ofEsquireshe bears witness to this period:

Her biggest fear was losing her anonymity. I said to him, ‘Look, can you be an actor for the rest of your life? If you choose this role, it will. You’ll never have to worry about not being able to pay the rent again. If you accept, you just have to decide and make sure that the role will not affect your life negatively.

At the same time, Chris Evans is called by Joel Silver and Robert Downey Jr., whose career was relaunched by his role as Tony Stark alias Iron Man in the Marvel universe. Finally, Evans ends up accepting and confirms in the reference book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universethe words of his mother:

I was worried that this was going to be a life changing experience and that the commitment it required would be more than I could endure. But in the end it didn’t, and it was the best decision I’ve made in my life.

Feige and Silver will both be content as Evans will become Captain America for seven feature films and Sebastian Stan will play (and still plays) Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Universe. He even had the right to his series with Falcon, on Disney +:
