Marvel: Iron Man’s comeback? So Robert Downey Jr. could return after all

Was Iron Man’s death really final in the MCU? At least that’s what Kevin Feige claims – but Robert Downey Jr. could still return as Tony Stark!

  • Iron Man is dead and should stay dead, at least that’s Kevin Feige’s opinion.
  • But more and more of the big Marvel heroes are leaving the MCU, so at some point important characters have to return.
  • Luckily, Robert Downey Jr. could return as Tony Stark without reviving Iron Man.

“Avengers: Endgame” not only ended the Infinity Saga, but also the story of Iron Man. The Marvel hero who began the MCU’s success story sacrificed his life to defeat Thanos and save the world. An emotional farewell for a while?

As disastrous as the “Endgame” finale seemed, hardly anyone believed that the MCU would have to do without Iron Man forever. In the Marvel comics, heroes die from time to time and then return through magic or the multiverse, and Iron Man is simply too important a hero to be completely ignored.

In a Vanity Fair report on the career of Robert Downey Jr., MCU mastermind Kevin Feige spoke about a potential return and clearly ruled out a revival of Tony Stark. Is this the last word spoken?

Everything rises and falls with Robert Downey Jr.

We will preserve this moment and not touch it again. We have all worked very hard for many years to reach this moment and we would never want to magically undo it.

So Iron Man is dead and is not coming back from the dead. But there are of course numerous other ways to have Robert Downey Jr. appear as Tony Stark without overwriting his victim in “Endgame.”

The multiverse in particular offers a simple explanation for Tony Stark’s return. The Tony Stark we have known since “Iron Man” is and remains dead, but of course there are other Tony Starks on other versions of Earth who resemble our Tony Stark.

Flashbacks or time travel are also ways to bring Robert Downey Jr. back into the MCU. But although Kevin Feige’s denial offers enough loopholes for a reunion with Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. should also be willing to return.

After leaving the MCU, Downey filmed The Fantastic Voyage of Dr. Dolittle. The film flopped and Marvel fans hoped that Downey would reconsider his decision and return as Iron Man.

But Downey made it no secret that he wanted to devote himself to other projects and with “Oppenheimer” he landed a role that could even win him his first Oscar. That doesn’t exactly speak for an Iron Man return.

However, the multiverse also offers a plan B here. A Tony Stark from another universe does not necessarily have to be played by Robert Downey Jr.; a new cast could be easily explained. But Robert Downey Jr. is certainly not above at least a short guest appearance in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which could change the MCU we know forever.
