The Echo series is arriving in a few days on Disney +. The latest promo video confirms that old Marvel/Netflix series, like Daredevil or The Punisher, are indeed canonical to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This may seem obvious, but there was still doubt.
In a few days, the Echo series will land on Disney Plus. Spin-off of Hawkeye (2021), it will follow the adventures of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) against the terrible Kingpin (Vincent d’Onofrio). The latest promotional campaign also focuses on this character and confirms that old Marvel/Netflix series are indeed canonical to the MCU. This may seem obvious, especially with the return of actors in new projects, but it was not yet completely confirmed.
The promo spot uses images from the Daredevil series (2015-2018) to retrace the journey of Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin. Fact, Echo will take into account past events to build his story. However, it was not really won, the Netflix series having always been a little apart.
The Daredevil series is well connected to the MCU
A little step back is in order. In 2013, Marvel regained the film rights to several of its characters, including Daredevil and the Punisher. In the process, the house of ideas started series dedicated to these “realistic” heroes under the aegis of Marvel Television, an entity then different from Marvel Studios. This project is carried out in partnership with Netflix, then booming and alone in the streaming segment. In 2015, the first burst of episodes was released (Daredevil) and connected to the MCU via various references. However, these series evolved a little apart for years. They offer a universe in isolation which does not cause any impact on the films. With the creation of Disney+ and the production of series directly under the aegis of Marvel Studios, Marvel Television/Netflix creations are abandoned. The platform removes them from its catalog and they are then integrated into Disney+. Since then, a question has been nagging fans: are they considered “canon”?

Since 2021, several contradictory signals have been sent by Disney. On the one hand, the Netflix actors have reprized their roles (Charlie Cox as Daredevil in No Way Home or She-Hulk and Vincent d’Onofrio as Kingpin in Hawkeye), which is encouraging. On the other hand, the Daredevil Born Again series, currently in production, has long been considered a “reboot”. Finally, this promo spot confirms the theory of Netflix series integrated into the chronology.
Brad Winderbaum, one of the bigwigs at Marvel Studios, confirmed the thing in the columns of Screenrant. Daredevil is well integrated into the sacrosanct timeline. By extension, this means that this is also the case for other Netflix series, like Punisher, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and even Iron Fist. Obviously, this does not mark the return of all these heroes to the screen.
Echo will be released under the Spotlight label, which will include all the “mature” and down-to-earth series from the MCU… like the Netflix creations of the time. Released January 9.
