This October 18 marks the release of Marvel Snap, the first baby from independent studio Second Dinnerwhose leader is none other than Ben Brode, creator / director of Hearthstone from its release in 2014, until 2018, and more than just a leader, he will have truly been an emblematic figure of the game and is still considered today as one of the main reasons the game has been so successful.
And personally, having been a professional competitor on Hearthstone for many years, just out of respect for Mr. Brode, I had to talk about Marvel Snap (and that’s pretty cool!).
Ok but what is Marvel Snap?
Do you know Pokemon Snap? Good, it has nothing to do with it. Marvel Snap is a lightning-fast TCG available on mobile and PC and based on the Marvel multiverse, which includes a huge number of its superheroes and supervillains (hat if you know them all by the way, it’s clearly not the case here).
To put it very simply, you have 6 turns to win at least 2 of the 3 places in the middle in the middle of the screen which dictate the rules of the game, using a deck of 12 unique cards that you will build beforehand . Each card has a cost, a power which gives points in the zone where you choose to play it, and an activation effect for the vast majority. You win more places than your opponent, you win. Easy, right?
Currently there are approximately 240 maps, as well as 80 different locationsmaking each game quite unique and helps to avoid rapid weariness.
Why this free game can really work?
Marvel Snap has a lot of qualities to appeal to the greatest number and I will try to make an exhaustive list:
- Ben Brode, former director of the hit card game Hearthstone !
- The game is free. No entry barrier to cross, there is a season pass system if you want it where lots of cosmetics can be found, as well as missions to earn in-game currency and unlock map skins.
- Very little “pay to win”, especially “pay to progress”. No frustration of losing release day to xXMillionaireXx because he put 500 balls in the game in a game after which you’re going to rush to uninstall, and constant progression that makes it easier to learning and the first constructions of decks, one does not have the impression to sink under a surplus of information.
- Very easy to access, but also a great depth of play possible.
- Like its competitors Hearthstone, Legends of Runeterra and other bangers of the genre, the game has a PC port but above all a mobile version, for which we feel that the game was first thought of, and that is the main objective of Second Dinner : have a game accessible to all, easy to learn and fast games (5-6 minutes maximum) which are very suitable for the platform.
- An archi-known universe. Even me not being a big fan of Marvel, unless we live in a cave we obviously all know Iron Man, Dr Strange, Deadpool, Scarlet Witch and many other characters from the franchise, and it speaks to both zoomers and boomers.
- Marvel Snap is very playful and the games are very fast, it’s easy to follow up.
- Everything you do in the game leads to a progression system and it feels like being productive.
- It’s always cool to collect lots of stuff and Marvel Snap is full of it!
- The game is sexy, it shines, there are 3D effects, the music is cool and there’s even Pitbull singing in the trailer, well…
A few annoying things though…
All that was for the positive points, I will still talk about some negative points just to be impartial (even if there are not many at the moment):
The PC port may displease anti-mobile games, it’s a little vertical, but will improve later I think. In addition, do not be afraid during the tutorial on PC, the game has a 60FPS version and you have access to the settings at the end of the tutorial. On the side of the FR translation, it is decent but not incredible, prefer the English version if you can. Finally, the game is visually difficult to stream, and probably won’t have a lot of hype on Twitch, which can slow down its acquisition of new players.
