Currently starring in Doctor Strange 2 as Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen has spoken about the controversy surrounding Marvel films, which some consider sub-cinema.
In recent years, big names in the 7th Art like Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola have declared that they do not consider superhero films as cinema. Critics that made a lot of talk in Hollywood, some going in the direction of these illustrious filmmakers when others defended Marvel productions.
The latest is Elizabeth Olsen, the interpreter of Scarlet Witch in the MCU, currently in the cinema in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Interviewed by The Independent on the subject, the actress revealed to be frustrated when people talk about Marvel movies like “a kind of inferior art”.
“I’m not saying we make indie art films, but I just think it belittles our technical teams, which bothers me.“, she explained. And to continue: “They are among the most extraordinary decorators, costume designers and cameramen. I feel like diminishing them with this kind of criticism is devaluing all these people who make award-winning films, who also work on these projects.“
The one who replies to Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange 2 nevertheless clarified that she understood some of the criticisms made of blockbusters of this genre, while continuing to defend the film crews:
From the actor’s point of view, it doesn’t matter, I understand; I totally understand that we give a different kind of performance. But I think smearing Marvel’s reputation hurts the hundreds of very talented members of the technical teams. This is where I get a little angry about this.
Elizabeth Olsen therefore joins the list of actors who have defended Kevin Feige’s studio, such as her colleague Avenger Tom Holland, or even stars outside the MCU like Nicolas Cage who recently declared: “Marvel is doing a great job!”
