Marvel: the director of this French nugget would like to make a superhero film

The director of the “Five Devils”, Léa Mysius, would be ready to direct a Marvel film. On good terms…

The Five Devils with Adèle Exarchopoulos, released on August 31 and presented at the 75th Cannes Film Festival during the Directors’ Fortnight, is unlike anything you’ve seen before.

An intimate and fantastic drama, the film tells the story of Vicky, a strange and lonely little girl who has a gift: she can smell and reproduce all the scents of her choice which she collects in carefully labeled jars. She secretly extracted the scent of her mother, for whom she has a mad, almost sickly love. One day Julia, her father’s sister, bursts into their lives. Vicky embarks on the development of her scent. She is then transported to dark and magical memories where she will discover the secrets of her village, her family and her own existence.

The film’s co-writer and director, Léa Mysius, who was also nominated for Cannes for this film, was recently interviewed by TheWrap as the film was released on a limited basis in the United States on March 24th and will be available on Mubi for American audiences, among others, starting May 12.

Asked about her next film, the filmmaker revealed that she does not know what her next project will be, which will be a surprise, she who constantly changes her mind. To the question would she like to direct a Marvel film, the young woman does not say no but, one thing is certain: she would not do it in France.

I don’t know about the Marvel question. Of course, I’d love to do something like that, something more resourceful, in terms of putting together a bigger show, and maybe a Marvel-like movie. But if I do that, it can’t be in France. Because I think it would be a bit silly to do a Marvel movie in France. It’s never a good thing to imitate cinema that comes from elsewhere, especially not from the United States. And I have the impression that when in France, we want to do something inspired by Marvel films, it ends badly, because we’re not Americans. If I have to do something like that, well, I should go to the States and work there, I think.

A woman behind the camera, and a Frenchwoman who moves the cinema moreover? Marvel Studios, it’s up to you!

The Five Devils is currently available on VOD.
