Marvel: this detail prevented an Avenger from joining the Guardians of the Galaxy

Find out which Avenger was supposed to make a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and why it ultimately couldn’t happen. A hint: he has a goatee!

Guardians of the Galaxy with… an Avenger?! In 2013, when director and screenwriter James Gunn was preparing to film Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel, he wanted to have the cameo of a weighty superhero, a billionaire philanthropist ex-weapons manufacturer turned savior of the widow and the orphan.

Except that after Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr. was no longer under contract with Marvel. The studio wanted him back for Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and three other Avengers films.

But at this time, the actor was getting his ears pulled, responding in the media who asked him about his possible return to the post-Iron Man 3 MCU: “I do not know”. To put it another way, he was in full renegotiation and if producer Kevin Feige wanted to see him again as Tony Stark, Disney would have to pay the price.

The Guardians therefore did not turn at the right time, because at the time, the contract of “RDJ” was not renewed. The scene would have been interesting, however, and had to be done in homage to the fact that at the time, in the comics, Iron Man was the last member of the Guardians.

It won’t happen and Star-Lord and his friends won’t meet Iron Man until years later in Avengers: Infinity War, during a scene with an anthology dialogue started by Tony Stark:

“Are you from Earth?

– Not from Earth. From Missouri.

– Yes, it is on Earth, the illiterate.”

The Guardians will be back in theaters in May 2023 for their third adventure, after their special Christmas episode scheduled for Disney+ next December.
