Warning, spoilers for “Thor: Love and Thunder” follow!

  • The MCU seems to know only one path for female characters: martyrdom. A trend is also emerging in “Thor 4”.
  • In addition to Jane Foster, many heroines in the MCU have given their lives for the sake of meanness.
  • Moving forward, Marvel desperately needs more innovative stories for the female characters, because they are there!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is often criticized for not getting enough out of the female characters. Even though Scarlett Johansson has been there as Black Widow since 2010, it wasn’t until 2019 with the 21st MCU film that a female heroine was seen as the lead.

Since then, Marvel has increasingly relied on strong female characters and has clearly increased at the front. In “Thor: Love and Thunder”, however, a trend is gradually emerging that leaves a bland and bitter aftertaste and gives the feeling that Marvel really doesn’t know what to do with the strong female characters.

What is meant is the trend that many good female roles in the MCU sacrifice themselves for the good of the world. A noble feat, but now this is a repeating story that one grows weary of. Can the MCU women only express their heroism by sacrificing themselves for the greater good?

Of course, this lack of ideas started in “Avengers: Endgame”. There, Natasha (Johansson) sacrifices herself for Clint Barton and the Avengers’ victory. This death hits fans, and while Natasha certainly gained a fair amount of heroism as the first MCU heroine, that gesture of sacrifice is becoming less and less valuable.

Already in “Avengers: Infinity War” Gamora (Zoe Saldana) sacrificed himself to a certain extent, or was sacrificed so that the Guardians of the Galaxy would not be killed by Thanos. Another heroic act, but the value is diminished when you consider that Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) also ultimately find no other way to be heroic than to sacrifice themselves.

There’s also Aunt May Parker (Marisa Tomei) in Spider-Man: No Way Home, who doesn’t sacrifice herself as a person, but is sacrificed by the filmmakers to give the protagonist, Peter Parker (Tom Holland), one more look to give an extra boost of emotionality.

This plot element was also present in Thor: The Dark Kingdom, when Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), is killed by the dark elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings ” and to a certain extent also in “Eternals”, where Ajak (Salma Hayek) dies as a mother figure.

Doesn’t Marvel really know a better way to turn strong female characters into heroines, or to use them in an effective and weighty way in the story? In and of itself, heroic sacrifice is a good idea, as mentioned above, but the dose makes the poison, as the saying goes.

Although there are also male heroes in Vision (Paul Bettany) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who now and then become martyrs, it is otherwise clear that with men great power comes great responsibility and with women great responsibility Makes the certainty of an imminent expiry date.

Without going too much into the negative aspects here, there are of course many good heroines in the MCU with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) as well as other heroines inserted female figures, of which we want to see more. But please not another martyr scene!

The next Marvel highlight is the Disney+ series “She-Hulk”, which will start streaming in August 2022. The big screen will continue in November 2022 with “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, in which, after the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, a female heroine will now also play the leading role.
