“Spider-Man” director Jon Watts is leaving the new Marvel film “Fantastic Four”. But why is the successful filmmaker now withdrawing from the superhero universe?

Director Jon Watts has delivered one of the most successful films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. No wonder that Marvel boss Kevin Feige wanted to deepen the successful cooperation and hired Watts for “Fantastic Four”. But now Jon Watts has dropped out.

Watts directed the entire “Spider-Man” trilogy starring Tom Holland for Marvel. In his statement, he explained his exit, according to US magazine Entertainment Weekly: “Doing three ‘Spider-Man’ films has been an incredible and life-changing experience for me.”

“I’m eternally grateful to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I hope to collaborate again and I can’t wait to see it happen [Marvel] brings the great vision of ‘Fantastic Four’ to life.”

Kevin Feige and the Marvel team are also very pleased with Watts’ work and extremely optimistic about the future: “We’ve been really excited to continue working together to bring ‘Fantastic Four’ to the MCU, but understand and support his reasons, to retire. We are optimistic that one day we will have the opportunity to work together again.”

A new director for “Fantastic Four” must now be found. It is also unclear whether the story of “Spider-Man” will continue. Unfortunately without Jon Watts. The reason for his exit is certainly that the filmmaker now wants to devote himself to other projects.

Working for years in the superhero forge is certainly fun, but as a young filmmaker you are also committed. Now, Watts certainly wants to use his MCU experience and freedom to tackle more personal projects. In June, the series “The Old Man” starts with Jeff Bridges, in which Watts directed the first episode.

He’s also working on a new film with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, although nothing has been announced about it yet. Watts will definitely not be bored after his MCU exit.
