Marvel’s Midnight Suns: Release date, gameplay, heroes present… All about the Tactical RPG

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is certainly one of the most unexpected games of recent years, since we did not expect to see Marvel at Firaxis. Fans were waiting for Civilization 7 and XCOM 3 instead. And that’s not all, rather than offering something in line with their previous titles, this new title has absolutely nothing to do in terms of gameplay, with TCG , and what could almost be described as a social interaction game around superheroes. It may seem strange said like that, but at least we can’t blame them for not trying anything. While waiting for the test in a few days, here is the main information about it.

Release date and platforms

After several successive reports, it is not necessarily very clear. Marvel’s Midnight Suns arrives this December 2, 2022 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. The game is also planned for PS4, Xbox One, and even Nintendo Switch, but without a release date on these platforms, probably for the sake of optimization.

Marvel's Midnight Suns

Gameplay

We come to interesting things, since Marvel’s Midnight Suns has a gameplay with multiple facets, radically different from each other. The fights take place on small maps, such as the roof of a building, a sewer, or the central room of a HYDRA base, without exploration phases. We control there 3 Marvel heroes, facing hordes of various enemies, including villains, such as Venom. The battles are turn-based, but they don’t have absolutely nothing to do with XCOM. Here, no coverage, nor individual action points. Instead, we use playing cards, TCG style. Each hero has an individual deck of 8 cards, they are then all shuffled, and a part arrives in your hand. You can perform 3 actions and one movement in total, to be shared between the 3 heroes. It may not seem like much, but quick cards reimburse actions when you kill an enemy, for example, and special cards allow you to have free actions, or to use objects. Attacks and techniques also generate heroism, a special resource that allows you to use the most powerful abilities, or perform additional actions using the terrain, like in action movies.

Apart from drawing cards, almost nothing is based on luck. You see what the enemies are going to do, and the interface shows you exactly what effect your cards are going to have, like splashes and area of effect. At the end of the round, the enemies act, reinforcements arrive and we start again. The maps and the objectives are varied, in order to preserve the interest. Each hero has many cards to collect and upgrade, with different builds possible through their selection. If we add the large number of heroes and the team compositions, it gives interesting situations.

Marvel's Midnight Suns

The other side of the gameplay takes place at the Abbey, the base of the Midnight Suns. It is strongly reminiscent of Fire Emblem: Three Houses or Persona. We walk around in the third person, and it is possible to discuss with the heroes, even to socialize with them. For the first time, the game really allows to interact with the heroes in their daily life. They don’t spend their whole life with a cape and a mask, they also like watching TV, reading, spending evenings with their new teammates, causing dramas, etc. There is therefore a huge RPG phase in the development of these relationships, with multiple choice dialogues, quests, and some puzzles to be resolved during exploration. It is unfortunately not possible to develop a romance between your character and the Marvel heroes, even showering them with gifts, which makes sense, they already have a life and a rich history. Spiderman isn’t going to abandon Mary Jane like that, even if you’re super nice. Instead, you can participate in more activities with them, and be considered their best friend for life. Concretely, you will be entitled to an ability and a legendary costume, as well as various combat bonuses. Fans of the Marvel characters should also appreciate these relatively intimate moments, as well as the long hours of interaction between the different characters. It’s not very pretty, but in terms of content and fan service, you should be served. And if that’s not your cup of tea at all, this facet of the gameplay can almost be ignored in order to chain the tactical fights.
