What a wonderful anniversary – 20 years of marriage! It is unforgettable how King Frederik cried tears of joy during the wedding mass as his Mary walked down the aisle. Two decades later, the couple celebrated the big day with a state visit to the Norwegian royal family. An official event – and at the same time a meeting with friends, even more so: “the family”, as Frederik emphasized on site.

Mary and Frederik have been struggling since an alleged affair

The troubled Danish royals could really use some family support right now. The couple is still struggling with the aftermath of Frederik’s alleged affair with the Mexican presenter Genoveva Casanova, 47. A few months have passed since he stayed overnight with his “good friend” in Madrid – but nothing has been forgotten. The feeling that something is wrong between Mary and Frederik is also present at the dinner in Oslo. When King Harald, 87, starts to talk about the guests’ wedding anniversary, Mary, who had previously been so friendly, stares at the table. Husband Frederik looks at the speaker; his eyes are shining. This time they are certainly not tears of joy.

Mette-Marit and Haakon had to face many crises

The idea behind the state visit sounds so simple and good that it could actually work: Haakon, 50, and Mette-Marit, 50, are to mediate. No royal couple knows more about crises – and how to overcome them – than these two. They had to fight from the start: their love was considered extremely controversial because of Mette’s illegitimate son Marius and her own party girl past.

After the wedding, there were worries about the princess’s extreme (now treated) fear of flying and her various health problems, which culminated in the devastating diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis. Team Norway managed all of this together. Although not everything always runs smoothly in their seemingly flawless relationship, as the couple recently admitted in a TV documentary. The atmosphere is often tense, Mette said frankly. Great! So much openness makes her a role model for couples who have lost each other a little on the long road to marriage. Like Frederik and Mary.

Mary and Frederik: not only a family but an entire country depends on their love

The mission to help the two reconcile is immensely important. Because not only a family but an entire country depends on their love. Former regent Margrethe, 84, is said to be extremely worried about her life’s work and fears that the conflict could destabilize the monarchy. Your Frederik without the hardworking, popular and always radiant Mary? Unimaginable.

And that’s why there is a special part of the program that allows plenty of time for talking: the quartet takes a long walk along the newly opened path around Lake Ulsrudvann, deep in conversation. Mary is usually next to Mette, Frederik almost always at Haakon’s side. An image of hope. Did the therapy work? That remains to be seen. They travel back to Denmark separately: Mary with her private secretary; Frederik on the yacht “Dannebrog”. He has to endure the rough seas on the way back home alone.
