It was a historic day that took place this Sunday, January 14. During the traditional speech on December 31, the Queen of Denmark announced her withdrawal from the throne. After 52 years of reign, Margrethe II officially abdicated for reasons revealed by the media Se og Hoer. It is his eldest son, Frederik, who is became the new king of Denmark. On the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, Frederik X was proclaimed the country’s new ruler, alongside his wife, Mary of Denmark. The Danes witnessed this transfer of power like no other. Instead of that, Mary of Denmark reached out to Margrethe II before kissing her on the cheek. This behavior, which is completely new, is however not a breach of royal protocol. Indeed, the wife of Frederik X became the new queen of Denmark. So, Mary of Denmark no longer has any obligation to curtsy to his mother-in-law and is expected to make this new greeting a tradition for future royal events.
