Greg Abbott is a staunch opponent of the mask requirement. Now the governor of the US state Texas has been infected with Corona. The Republican previously attended a party event.

The governor of the US state of Texas, Greg Abbott, has contracted the coronavirus. The Republican politician, a vehement opponent of a mask requirement, tested positive one day after meeting numerous party friends at an event in an enclosed space, his office announced. The governor was fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, in good health and currently showing no symptoms of Covid 19 disease. He went into self-isolation in his residence. His wife Cecilia Abbott was reportedly tested negative.

Abbott is one of the governors in the United States who have spoken out most clearly against regulations on wearing a mask to protect against corona. By decree, he also banned all government agencies and institutions that receive public funds from making mandatory vaccination requirements. Several Texas school districts issued regulations on their own to wear masks.

In the pandemic, Abbott put political considerations “above public health,” tweeted former Democratic presidential candidate and former mayor of the Texas city of San Antonio, Julian Castro. He hoped the governor would reconsider his stance on masking requirements in schools.

In Texas, the corona situation is particularly tense due to the particularly contagious Delta variant. Last week, for example, hospitals were asked to postpone medical interventions that were not absolutely necessary. In addition to Texas, the southern states of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Missouri are also badly affected by the latest corona wave.
