What is it about ?

Masquerade by Nicolas Bedos

Released in cinemas on November 1, 2022

When a young gigolo falls under the spell of a sublime hustler, it’s the start of a Machiavellian plan under the scorching sun of the Côte d’Azur. Are the two lovers ready to do anything to afford a dream life, even if it means sacrificing that of a former glory of cinema and a real estate agent?

Why did the Rédac’ choose this film?

Masquerade is a film of great virtuosity. It is a declaration of love to the cinema, its actresses and its actors. This fourth feature film by Nicolas Bedos is clever, fierce, and above all, great entertainment, rich in twists and turns!

As we wrote during its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival, out of competition, Masquerade is a choral, ambitious film, which has its sights set more on drama than comedy, even if the author allows himself some amusing sequences and a lot of irreverence. .

In front of this fresco, where each character has two faces – the best and the worst -, we think of many Hollywood films, like Sunset Boulevard. In particular on the side of Isabelle Adjani who embodies an actress recluse in her mansion. The actress, who has never been afraid of putting herself in danger and risking madness in her previous roles, is irresistible. She plays with her image, has fun with it, makes fun of it and shows a face that she had never revealed before.

What does Club AlloCiné think?

  • Excellent: 63%
  • Good: 28%
  • Not so bad: 5%
  • Very little for me: 4%

Alice025 – “Nicolas Bedos paints us behind the scenes of this French Riviera, this contrast between this omnipresent luxury and the people who covet it. A few small lengths but which will be quickly forgotten because the stakes of this story fascinate. An original film in its staging and very pleasant to see.”

Cinephiles 44 – “Beneath the bling bling and beautiful sets, the film dynamically alternates dramatic scenes with manipulation games by adding laughable dialogues. If the finesse of the whole is gradually moving away from “La Belle era” to end up at “OSS 117: Red Alert in Africa”, it is nonetheless a well-rounded entertainment.

Let’s celebrate cinema – “A breadcrumb trail in Nicolas Bedos’ small cinema is the theme of pretense and imposture, applied in Mascarade, by far his best film, to the codes of the thriller and the comedy of manners.”

velocio – “Nicolas Bedos proves once again that he is a very good director of actors and, even better, an excellent director of actresses. (…) What[il] obtained from Isabelle Adjani (Martha), Marine Vacth (Margot), Emmanuelle Devos (Carole, Simon Laurenti’s wife) and Laura Morante (Giulia, a friend of Adrien. What a pleasure to “find” this magnificent actress!) is exceptional, even if we know the great talent of these actresses.”

“Everything is good”, “A masterclass”, “Incredible”… The opinion of Club AlloCiné spectators on video:
