Wild brawls with striking tools, people lying on the ground are kicked: In downtown Munich there is a large-scale operation on Sunday because allegedly 80 supporters of FC Bayern and 1860 Munich organize a mass brawl. The criminal police are investigating.
On Sunday evening there was a mass brawl in downtown Munich. The two groups of people are said to have been rival fan groups from football clubs. This is confirmed by the Munich police. According to consistent media reports, it was supporters of FC Bayern and 1860 Munich who beat each other up.
The police headquarters in Munich reports of a “larger police operation“, after several reports of “a fight between a large number of people” had been received around 10:15 p.m. “It was found on site that two groups of around forty people each had met there for a physical altercation. Many of the people were masked and some carried striking tools. After a brief argument, one of the groups had left the scene of the crime. As part of the search, a large number of people who were probably involved in the dispute were checked,” it said. The criminal police are now investigating, among other things, for breach of the peace.
No arrests and no comments
The media reports assume that the Bayern fans had ambushed the supporters of 1860 Munich as they were on their way home from the third division game at Rot-Weiss Essen (2-2). Photos and videos showed how hooded people brutally beat each other. People lying on the ground are said to have been kicked further. FC Bayern supporters are said to have worn uniform white T-shirts, which would indicate a planned action. “It is not yet certain who attacked whom,” said a police officer in the “Bild” quoted.
So far there have been no statements from the two clubs or from fan groups. The Munich police have not yet arrested any suspects, but have called witnesses and asked the public for relevant information.
