The ver.di union is calling for warning strikes in local public transport. Buses and trains are scheduled to come to a standstill on Friday, February 2, 2024.
All federal states except Bavaria are affected. The length of the strikes in the respective federal states can vary. It can be a half-day or full-day strike, reports NDR.
Depending on the federal state, the information situation on strikes varies and sudden changes can occur as a result of further negotiations.
Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony
In Schleswig-Holstein, the warning strike is only planned in the four cities of Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg and Neumünster. In Lower Saxony, work stoppages can be expected in Braunschweig, Göttingen, Osnabrück, Goslar, Hanover and Wolfsburg. In Bremen, employees of Bremer Straßenbahn AG will go on strike.
No subway traffic in Hamburg
More than 2,000 employees are to go on strike in Hamburg. The transport company Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH), which operates primarily on the outskirts and surrounding areas, is affected.
However, it is now clear that the Hamburger Hochbahn will be on strike and therefore neither buses nor subways will be running on Friday. The S-Bahn is not affected.
Berlin and Brandenburg
In the capital Berlin, the strike will last until 10 a.m., according to a report in the Tagesschau. In Brandenburg the whole day is even planned.
North Rhine-Westphalia
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the strikes will probably begin on Friday morning and will affect many commuters and students. Among other things, there are strikes in Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Wuppertal, Solingen, Remscheid, Cologne, Bonn, Essen and Münster.
Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Hesse
There are strikes all day long in Dresden, Chemnitz, Leipzig, Plauen and Zwickau. Passengers in Saxony-Anhalt must expect restrictions in Dessau, Magdeburg, Halle and the Burgenland district.
Anyone who lives in Hesse must expect strikes in bus, subway and tram transport, especially in Kassel, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt and Offenbach.
Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palz
We are also on strike in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg, for example in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn, Freiburg, Baden-Baden, Esslingen and Konstanz. All-day strikes are also planned here.
There will be strikes in Saarland from Thursday evening, including on the Saarbahn buses, in Saarbrücken, Neunkirchen, Völklingen, Lebach and Saarlouis.
Ver.di wants to use the warning strikes to achieve better working conditions for employees in local public transport. It’s about more vacation days and adjusted shift allowances.
Public transport follows the GDL strike
In January, the GDL called for a strike lasting several days in the collective bargaining dispute with Deutsche Bahn, but ended it early because negotiations were taking place again.
Anyone who resorts to driving during a strike can still see where traffic jams are imminent thanks to Google Maps.
Strike also at the airport
Before the work stoppage in local transport, there are strikes at many German airports on February 1st and major restrictions are to be expected. For example, there are no passenger flights in Hamburg.
Anyone who still has to use public transport during the strikes may still be able to reach their intended destination using other means of transport.
