Kruse’s Magath sayings annoy VfL Wolfsburg

Wandervogel Max Kruse makes it very clear which coach he would like to avoid in his career: Felix Magath. The professional from VfL Wolfsburg announced that he was “sick”. Magath led him to the German championship. Kruse’s statements are not well received in Lower Saxony.

At VfL Wolfsburg, goalscorer Max Kruse’s critical comments about Hertha coach Felix Magath were not well received. “I found this explicit statement inappropriate and I told him so,” said Wolfsburg coach Florian Kohfeldt. Sports director Marcel Schäfer agreed with criticism: “It is inappropriate to talk about Bundesliga colleagues in general or to express certain criticism.” The management of VfL Wolfsburg, which had been fighting relegation for most of the season, expects “our players, like everyone else, to focus fully on their own task and on what we want to achieve. We need each other there other things. We told Max that too.”

Wolfsburg’s top scorer Max Kruse had ruled out ever wanting to play under Magath. “I go everywhere, but never to Magath,” Kruse said recently in a question and answer session with fans broadcast on his Twitch channel. “He’s a shyer! But I heard he gives you a break after 30. But he’s sick! He makes medicine balls until people puke.”

Schäfer emphasized that Kruse’s statements also went against someone who had achieved “extraordinary things” in Wolfsburg. Magath sensationally led Wolfsburg to their only German championship in 2009. His manner is “very much appreciated” at VfL. “Although you can say with a smile: What would have become of Max Kruse if he had trained under Felix Magath,” said Schäfer. According to the statements, he did not seek contact with Magath. It is not known whether the sayings for Kruse have further consequences beyond a serious conversation.

Kohfeldt and Schäfer both know their professional well: The coach once promoted Kruse to captain in Bremen, sports director Schäfer once played with the striker in his first season in Wolfsburg in 2015/16. However, the Magath era was long overdue: in October 2012, the club parted ways with its former successful coach.
