Masters of the Universe: abandoned by Netflix, the new live-action film will finally arrive in cinemas

Mattel hasn’t finished bringing its toys to life in the cinema! After the success of barbieit’s the turn of Masters of the Universe, license launched by the manufacturer in 1981, to hit the cinemas. A new live-action film centered on the adventures of He-Man (He-Man in original version) is in fact scheduled in American theaters for June 5, 2026.

A long-standing project

As reported Varietyit’s Travis Knight (Kubo and the Magic Armor, Bumblebee) who will be responsible for directing this film in live action, based on a script by Chris Butler (Mr. Link).

Mattel has been trying to bring He-Man back to the cinema since 2007, a project that went through several studios and many hands before finally coming to fruition at Amazon MGM Studios.

Early versions of the script were also written by David Callaham (Mortal Kombat) and brothers Aaron and Adam Nee (The Secret of the Lost City) for a film project The Masters of the Universe planned on Netflix. But the platform finally abandoned the idea last year.

If we do not yet know who will be in the casting, the synopsis announces that this new film The Masters of the Universe will introduce “a young 10-year-old Prince Adam whose spaceship crashed on Earth, separating the young man from his magic sword, his only connection to his home planet, Eternia. After searching for it for 20 years, the prince Adam is sent back through space to defend his planet against the evil forces of Skeletor To defeat such a powerful enemy, Adam will have to unravel the mysteries of his past and become He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. “

After creating the toys, The Masters of the Universe became a successful animated series in 1983, which itself was the subject of sequels, reboots and other spin-offs, but also comics and video games. A first live-action film was released in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren (Rocky 4) in the role of He-Man, but he was a flop.

Mattel does not intend to stop there, however, and aims to adapt a large number of its other toys to the cinema. Among the projects in development, a film about the dinosaur Barney produced by Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Bob the Builder produced by Jennifer Lopez, Polly Pocket with Lily Collins (Emily in Paris) in casting, or even a film Hot Wheels produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot company.

Note, new animated series around He-Man and his friends have been released on Netflix in recent years, notably Masters of the Universe: Revelationsequel to the original cartoon, and Masters of the Universe: Revolution.
