Mathias Moncorgé: “My father, Jean Gabin, adored Claude François!”

While an exhibition is currently devoted to Jean Gabin, his son gives us an intimate portrait of the actor through a series of tasty anecdotes. Gabin by Gabin. To (re) see Sunday May 22 at 9:10 p.m. on C8 in Du rififi à Paname.

When you think back to your father, what image comes to you first?

MATHIAS MONCORGE: When I went shopping with him, in Paris or Deauville. Sometimes he would pick me up from school and we would go to the racetrack. There, there was no longer the actor, only my father remained. It was only after his death that I realized what a star he was. There was then no longer the proximity that prevents objectivity.

Jean Gabin in intimacy, what did it look like?

When he was filming, dad came home every night and never talked about work. He once again became Jean Moncorgé, husband and father. He refused filming in the provinces or abroad. The rare exceptions were Provence, for The Dominici Affair, and Majorca, supposed to represent South America at the beginning of the Cave rebels. And even there, dad convinced the production to bring the set back to Hyères! And then there were also some sequences in Rome for The Clan of the Sicilians.

Speaking of Clan of the Sicilians, his filming was a bit spoiled. Why ?

My parents were to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary and it tookAlain Delon fuck his m… He wanted his name to be first on the poster, and that pissed off Dad, who was no longer in a party mood. Lino Ventura, who adored my father, found out about it and came to Rome when he wasn’t filming there. He went to see Alain Delon and threatened to stick one to him if he continued his whims. Delon crashed and had his name on the same level as the other actors.

Did you ever watch his films with him?

Rarely. And he happened to be severe when he met again. For The Bandera, who had aged very badly, he had said to us: “Remember that your father did something else!” His favorite movies were A monkey in winterThe day begins Where The cat, because he loved shooting with Simone Signoret.

What viewer was he?

He liked Intervilles, At the theater tonight, the news ofYves Mourousi and the Tour de France. And he never missed a show Carpenter. He loved Claude Francois whom he considered to be an authentic music-hall artist. He was amazed by his clothes, always nickel!
