Everyone knows the Matrix films, at least by name. But who remembers The Matrix, the series? Already with Carrie-Anne Moss in the cast, this fantastic show is today largely forgotten… and is not connected to the Wachowskis’ Matrix saga.
Matrix is a Canadian series broadcast from March to July 1993. If the cinema tetralogy focuses on the adventures of Neo and Trinity in the Matrix, the show is more of the fantasy genre than science fiction.
It follows a hitman named Steven Matrix, who is killed during one of his contracts. Sent to Purgatory, he must choose between being sent to hell or returning to Earth to help the living. He chooses the red pill… the return to Earth and becomes a sort of guardian angel with rather brutal methods.

Carrie-Anne Moss plays Elizabeth “Liz” Teel, co-owner with Matrix of the “Silver Flex Gym”, and having feelings for the former hitman whose dark past she knows nothing about. The hero is played by Nick Mancuso (the Tom Breaker from High Seas Trap and High Speed Trap) and his assistant Billy by Phillip Jarrett (who was coming out at the time of Rintintin Junior).
The Matrix show would be inspired by an episode of the Equalizer series. In the episode Sea of Fire (S04E02, broadcast in 1988), Robert McCall is responsible for punishing students who attacked one of their classmates. To do this, he has his friend Mickey Kostmayer (Keith Szarabajka), a professional assassin who had a near-death experience, testify before the guilty parties. A striking common point with the principle of Matrix.
The series was canceled after 13 episodes and largely forgotten, if not for the presence of Carrie-Anne Moss and its title. Absent from the platforms, it is very difficult to see but remains an object of curiosity – dated – for today’s spectators.
