Matthew McConaughey jokes about ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ title

Since 1985, the US magazine “People” has chosen the “Sexiest Man Alive” every year. Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey, 54, received this honor in 2005, almost 20 years ago. In conversation with the magazine he now looks back at the title – and is in the mood for jokes.

“You’re not the Sexiest Man Alive anymore, McConaughey,” people have told him every time someone else has been crowned since then, the actor explains. He then jokingly replied: “Well, I’m still alive. Come on!” The now 54-year-old is of the opinion that as the chosen one you do not lose this title, as he always answers. “If you hold the title and you’re still alive, you’re still the Sexiest Man Alive,” says McConaughey.

“A whole new kind of sexy”

The native Texan already took the award about two decades ago with humor. “Wait until you see the roles I might take after this,” was his reaction. “You’ll see my belly hanging out, plus 22 [Pfund]. This will be a whole new kind of sexy!”

And his mother Kay and the family were also amused by the award back then, as he now explains. He was raised by his relatives. And Kay’s comment? “She said what she’s always said. Every time I got known for anything, be it a role, be it the cover of People magazine, be it ‘Sexiest Man Alive,’ that was my mother’s reaction always the same: ‘Yes, I see where you got that from.'”

By the way, McConaughey is in good company. In recent years, Patrick Dempsey, 58, Chris Evans, 42, Paul Rudd, 55, Michael B. Jordan, 37, John Legend, 45, and Idris Elba, 51, have been named “Sexiest Man Alive”, among others.
