Max Liebermann’s notebooks: did the hero of the series really exist?

A thriller television series based on several novels of the same name, the diaries of Max Liebermann features a detective who must investigate disturbing murders. But a question arises: did Max Liebermann really exist?

Was detective Max Liebermann a real investigator working with the British police or was this hero invented from scratch by Frank Tallis, the writer of the eponymous book series? As a reminder, this psychological thriller produced by Stephen Thompson features a doctor and student of Sigmund Freud who assists a police detective in an attempt to unravel the mystery of several murders, each more disturbing than the next.

For the moment, the series “The Notebooks of Max Liebermann” has two seasons. But on July 6, 2020, Endor Productions and MR Film announced that a new season had been validated. Filming, with Matthew Beard (Max Liebermann) and Jürgen Maurer (Oskar Reinhardt) as main actors, has begun, no release date has yet been leaked.

Max Liebermann did exist, but he did not inspire the story of the series

But the question running through the minds of many fans is: Did Max Liebermann really exist or did this extraordinary character simply come out of the writer’s head? Well if a Max Liebermann did exist, the latter has nothing to do with the character of the series. He was a German painter and engraver born in 1847 and died in 1935. His works are currently exhibited in several major museums, such as the National Gallery in London, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Met in New York.
