Goodbye HBO Max… hello Max! Announced on April 12 by Warner Media, the (re)launch of the American streaming platform is finally effective this Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

Beyond the name change, this service, which is still unique in France, notably offers a more expensive subscription in its offer, giving access to more than 1,000 films and episodes of series in 4K Ultra HD. A logic soon to be applied in France?

Harry Potter, Game Of Thrones And The Last of Us in 4K

$19.99 per month. This is what American subscribers of the renamed Max platform will have to pay if they want to take advantage of a substantial catalog of 4K Ultra HD content. In addition to superior video quality, this Premium subscription also offers four simultaneous screens, 100 program downloads and Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision technologies.

Offered in parallel with the subscription with advertising at $9.99/month and the standard subscription at $15.99/month, this Max “Ultimate” offer notably includes the series Game Of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Last of Usbut also movies Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Matrix or even the trilogy Batman by Christopher Nolan.

In addition, all the next Warner films scheduled for cinemas (The Flash, Dunes 2, Furiosa, Joker: Madness for Two, Barbie…) will be offered in 4K Ultra HD on Max.

If the old platform HBO Max offered 4K content to its standard subscribers (at $15.99/month), it seems that Max has every intention of stopping the freebies, and offering 4K only to customers of its most expensive offer. A new policy supported by Sudheer Sirivara, the executive vice-president of Warner Bros. Discovery:

“We understand the value of delivering a cinematic experience to our users, and we’ve introduced more advanced technologies that now deliver more 4K content faster and more efficiently.”.

In France in autumn 2024

In France, the Max streaming platform is still not available. Many programs from Warner Bros. Discovery are however offered since March 16 via the Amazon Prime Video Warner Pass. An option at €9.99, in addition to the Prime subscription at €6.99 per month. Unfortunately, only three series of this Pass are currently in 4K: The Last of Us, House of the Dragon And Game Of Thrones.

Want Max? We will have to be patient: Warner Bros. Discovery has planned to launch its streaming platform in France, but not before the fall of 2024.
