Bayern stars read shocking hate messages

As a football professional, you don’t just get encouragement on social media. People often send them disturbing messages as well. Three Bayern stars give an insight into the insults they are sent.

The football stars Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka have drawn attention to the problem of hate comments on the Internet in an unusual campaign. In a video published on various social media channels, the FC Bayern Munich pros read real insults and insults from Internet users.

“You better shut up your unqualified mouth”. “It used to be Mia San Mia, now only foreigners”. “I spit on you, you freaks”. “May your team bus burn, you losers”. The sentences that the three internationals read in the video are sometimes shocking. Some words even had to be drowned out with a beep.

In the “Together against hatred on the internet” campaign launched together with main sponsor Deutsche Telekom, FC Bayern wants to provide information and support those affected. “During my professional days in the Bundesliga, I experienced what verbal derailments and aggression can do. These hate comments often remain hidden from the public online,” said Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn: “We need more transparency here.”

Telekom brand boss Uli Klenke emphasized that hate comments, shitstorms and bullying “poison the togetherness in real life and in the digital space”. His hope is: “Everyone should be able to navigate the Internet without fear.” In addition to the social media channels, the video with Müller, Sané and Goretzka will also be shown selectively on TV in sports environments.
