Measures initiated – measles alarm in Tyrol: So far 3 cases in the lowlands!

The highly contagious measles virus is apparently circulating in the Tyrolean district of Kufstein. According to the state health directorate’s current knowledge, there are now three confirmed cases. All clarifying measures have already been initiated, it was said on Wednesday.

According to information currently available to the authority, the three cases that became known this week are unrelated. According to the state, one person in Söll, one person in Kufstein and one resident of a refugee accommodation are affected. Search for contact persons “All precautions were taken immediately and the necessary clarification measures initiated. The medical officers are currently identifying potential contact persons. People who may be at risk and who are known to the authorities and with whom the sick person was last in contact will be informed,” explains Health Director Theresa Geley. The fact that measles now only occurs very rarely is thanks to the high vaccination rate in the population, according to Health Directorate Geley emphasizes: “The more people are protected, the sooner the spread of measles within the population can be prevented. Measles can have serious consequences, especially for infants.”Highly contagious virusMeasles is a highly contagious virus that is transmitted through tiny droplets expelled when speaking, coughing or sneezing. As a rule, the first flu-like symptoms of measles appear in non-immune people about ten to 14 days after contact with someone who is sick. In the preliminary stage, fever, runny nose, dry cough and conjunctivitis occur. After three to five days, a large patchy skin rash with renewed high fever and severe feeling of illness covers the entire body. If a person has been exposed to measles, an early measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination can be used to try to prevent the outbreak of the disease.
