Medal superpower – small but mighty! Austria’s skiing stronghold for young talent

The ÖSV youngsters have won 30 medals at the Junior World Championships since 2020. Ten times gold, eleven times silver and nine times bronze. Interesting: More than half of all podium places and eight out of ten World Cup titles were won by a single federal state: Vorarlberg.

Thanks to Lara Gut-Behrami and Marco Odermatt, the Swiss are currently not only dominating the Ski World Cup. The Swiss are also number one among young talent for the second year in a row. At the Junior World Championships in the French region of Haute-Savoie, our neighbors won four gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals. Behind Italy (2x gold, 1x silver, 1x bronze), Austria came in third place with one gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Mainly responsible for this: a Vorarlberg trio.Self-critical despite the gold medalThe 19-year-old Auer Victoria Olivier ensured a perfect start to the ÖSV with gold in the downhill. “I was very happy about this title,” said the army athlete, who then failed in the super-G and slalom and finished 17th in the giant slalom. “In the end, unfortunately, it wasn’t what I wanted to show – especially in terms of skiing.” Farewell with second bronze medal Jakob Greber from Mellau was well on his way to winning gold in the slalom – but failed immediately after the best intermediate time. “It was okay until then!” The 20-year-old, for whom it was the last JWM, didn’t have to leave Hochsavoyen empty-handed – like last year, the head driver took bronze in the team combination. At the side of ÖSV newcomer Moritz Zudrell. Only third slalom medal for Vorarlberg. The 18-year-old laid the foundation for the team medal with a solid Super-G and came up trumps on Friday. His silver was only the third slalom medal for the Ländle men in junior title fights. Before the silver thaler, only Rainer Salzgeber (gold 1985) and Kilian Albrecht (bronze 1992) were able to score in the slalom. Ländle won 17 out of 30 medals. This meant that Vici, Jakob and Moritz won half of all ÖSV medals and underlined Vorarlberg’s status as number 1 -Federal State. 17 of the 30 medals that Austria has been able to celebrate since the 2020 junior championships in Narvik, Norway, go to the VSV aces, who also won eight of the ten junior world championship titles in the last five years. Only the Tyrolean Lena Wechner (2021/Super-G) and the Salzburg Stefan Rieser (2020/Super-G) were able to win gold as non-Vorarlbergers.
