Hackers paralyze electric chain servers

Cyber criminals have apparently hijacked the servers of Mediamarkt and Saturn with an encryption Trojan. While the Group’s IT specialists get an overview of the damage, there are restrictions in the markets.

The electronics store chain MediaMarktSaturn became the target of a cyber attack on Monday night. A company spokesman said that the company is currently working flat out “to identify the systems affected and to fix any damage as quickly as possible.” The responsible authorities were informed immediately.

The Ingolstadt-based MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group and its national companies are affected by the cyber attack. MediaMarktSaturn is part of the Ceconomy Group and, according to its own information, operates 1,023 stationary stores of the MediaMarkt and Saturn brands in 13 European countries. Circulate on Twitter Screenshots of internal company messageswhich speak of a “crypto virus”. The malware attacked around 3,100 servers. The cash register and inventory control systems in the branches are affected.

In the stationary markets there could currently be “a limited service for some services,” said the spokesman. This included, for example, guarantees or financing. The online shops of the chains are currently not affected by the cyber attack. “There is currently no need for action for customers,” emphasized the spokesman. How long the restrictions will persist is unclear. The group did not want to give out further information, for example on possible ransom demands, for reasons of tactical investigations.
