Semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek recently unveiled its Kompanio 1380, a SoC dedicated to Chromebooks
.
Not just any Chromebooks, since this SoC will equip high-end devices.
Acer first in the race
The MediaTek Kompanio 1380 SoC has no less than eight cores, including four “high performance” and four more energy-efficient cores. The processor will be able to reach a power output of 3.0 GHz for the main cores (the others going up to 2.0 GHz) and will offer support for LPDDR4X RAM (at 2133 MHz).
On the GPU side, MediaTek’s SoC packs a five-core Mali-G57 GPU with it, which can support two 4K displays clocked at 60Hz, three 4K displays at 30Hz, or a single 1440p display at 120Hz. Chromebook to take advantage of the Kompanio 1380 will be none other than the new Acer Spin 513, which starts at $599. This therefore suggests that the SoC is primarily dedicated to high-end Chromebooks, the price being part of the high bracket for such a machine under Chrome OS.
