Medicines, physio, ambulance… Why your health expenses are likely to soar in 2024

In search of savings, Bercy plans to double the amount of the deductible on drugs and paramedical care. As well as that of the fixed participation of 1 euro at your doctor.

In the first quarter, French public debt exceeded the symbolic mark of 3000 billion euros. Either 112.5% of GDP. A situation that is all the more worrying because with the rise in interest rates, the cost of French debt is also increasing. So for Bercy, it’s time for savings.

The double deductible

And for that, the minister of Bruno Le Maire has several leads. Starting with a revaluation of the medical deductible. The latter, established in 2008, has not changed since. As a reminder, today, on each box of medicine that the Scu reimburses you, 50 euro cents remain your responsibility.

But in 2024, that could change. According to The echoes, Bercy plans to double the amount of this deductible. A way, according to Bruno Le Maire, to limit the free or almost free [des mdicaments] which can lead to disempowering the patient and explain why the purchase of drugs is still so high in France.

Paramedical acts, such as kin sessions or nursing care, as well as medical transport would also be affected. Currently, the former are subject to a deductible of 50 euro centswith a ceiling of 2 euros per day. For the latter, the deductible reaches 2 euroswith a ceiling of 4 euros per day.

Increase in the flat-rate contribution

Another planing stroke evoked by Bercy: the doubling of the fixed contribution. You know, that famous 1 euro who remains your responsibility after a consultation with your doctor, medical analyzes or an X-ray examination. The government is also considering extending the franchise to medical devices, such as bandages and crutches.

According to Bercy, doubling the medical deductible and the flat-rate contribution could allow Social Security to save nearly 1.5 billion euros per year. Provided, however, that the deductible ceilings, currently fixed 50 euros per patient and per year, are also doubled.

The problem? Is that these increases would penalize the sickest, and in particular patients who suffer from chronic diseases. With this specter of additional costs, they are punished for being sick, protests Grard Raymond, president of the France Assos Health federation, in the columns of the Parisian.

Those under 18, pregnant women over 6 months and beneficiaries of State Medical Aid (AME) will escape these increases no matter what, because the latter are exempt from deductible. For others, on the other hand, being sick could cost more in 2024.
