Emmanuel Macron arrived in New York for the 77th United Nations General Assembly. The president had a one-on-one dinner last night with Secretary General Antonio Guterres, he will speak on Tuesday evening at the UN rostrum. A trip deeply marked by the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian conflict is on everyone’s mind in New York.

With the Ukrainian conflict, Russia is further weakening the UN and multilateralism. For Catherine Colonna, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moscow is freeing itself from its responsibility as a permanent member of the Security Council. “By attacking Ukraine, Russia is attacking the very foundations of the United Nations. It is particularly worrying to see Russia crossing three thresholds in this war: a legal threshold, a moral threshold by the extent crimes committed in Ukraine and a political threshold, taking responsibility for blackmailing food security, blackmailing global energy security,” she explains.

Support Ukraine

So Emmanuel Macron will mention it this Tuesday evening during his speech at the United Nations podium. This general assembly should make it possible to amplify support for Ukraine and not to deepen the fractures of the world, in particular the food bill which will be at the heart of a working meeting on Wednesday morning with Senegalese President Macky Sall.

But that’s not all for Tuesday. The Head of State will be alongside Jacinda Ardern, the New Zealand Prime Minister, for the third summit of the Christchurch call, dedicated to the fight against the dissemination of terrorist and extremist content online.

A meeting with Joe Biden

Emmanuel Macron will also meet on Tuesday with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and British Prime Minister Liz Truss. He will meet Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati in the afternoon. An (extremely busy) program which will continue this Wednesday with an interview with his Chilean counterparts, Gabriel Boric and American Joe Biden.
