SEGA celebrates his 62nd birthday on June 3, 2022 and had teased in recent days a live presentation on Youtube in the presence of Hiroyuki Miyazaki and Yosuke Okunari, who had both worked on the design of the Mega Drive Mini / Genesis Mini, announced in 2018 and released only the following year by us. This was clearly not trivial, because the broadcast was an opportunity for the Japanese firm to unveil… the Mega Drive Mini 2 !
Already dated October 27, 2022 in Japan, this Mega Drive Mini 2 will give pride of place to Mega CD games and will include in total more than fifty productions, for a list price of ¥10,978, or about €79. The presentation is still ongoing, showing gameplay of different titles playable on this small retro console. We will add details as new information becomes available. Here is the list of confirmed games:
- Silpheed (MegaCD);
- Shining Force CD (MegaCD);
- Sonic CD (MegaCD);
- Yumemi Yakata no Monogatari (Yumemi: Mystery Mansion) (Mega CD);
- Popful Mail (MegaCD);
- Virtua Racing (Mega Drive);
- Bonanza Bros. (MegaDrive);
- Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive);
- Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive);
- Magical Taruruto Kun (Mega Drive);
- Fantasy Zone (Mega Drive).
As for the first, SEGA will also market a Mega Drive Tower Mini 2 including the Mega CD 2 accessory (the CD sonic cd included is dummy, as is the mini map Virtua Racing) and Mega Drive 1 and 32X expansions. The release date is the same, October 27 for a price of ¥4,950 (around €36). It will also be possible to buy a joystick 6B (for 6 buttons) separately for ¥2,750 (around €20). More details will be given in three weeks, then in July and August during other presentations. A official site also opened.
The first Mega Drive Mini being now difficult to find at an affordable price, let’s hope that if this second model is released internationally, SEGA take this opportunity to reissue the previous one… To play some Mega Drive games, you can always turn to the Nintendo Switch Online + Additional Pack.
