Buckingham Palace has confirmed the attendance of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the coronation of Charles III. If the wife of the Duke of Sussex maintains her commitment, she will however have to comply with a rather embarrassing protocol.

For many months, the presence of “Crown rebels” at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023 has the subject of debate. It must be said that after the release of the documentary Harry & Meghan on Netflix – pointing to all the pressure received by the couple from the royal family – then the publication of the Memoirs of Prince Harry, it is normal that the couple’s participation in the coronation of Charles III caused a stir. Yet Buckingham Palace did confirmed the attendance of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the event.

Although the reunion is likely to be particularly tense, Prince Harry and his wife will be invited almost as extras. No longer working members of the Royal Family, they will not hold any official role, nor will they be allowed to wave to the crowds on the Buckingham Balcony alongside Kate Middleton, William and the others. While it’s certainly a relief for Meghan Markle and Harry, the former actress of Suits should still submit to a point of protocol, which could motivate her to decline the invitation.

Coronation of Charles III: this embarrassing tradition to which Meghan Markle must comply

The coronation of a new monarch is surrounded by several rules and traditions. If the heir of Elizabeth II has abolished the ritual of allegiance of the dukes of the kingdom for May 6, 2023, another protocol obligation remains. Given that Kate Middleton and Prince William inherited the titles of Princess and Prince of Wales when Charles became King, Meghan Markle, as is customary, should show respect by greeting them with a genuflection. An embarrassing moment, even humiliatingfor Prince Harry’s wife who never really got over their falling out during the preparations for her 2018 wedding. Many royal experts are betting that Meghan Markle will find an excuse relevant enough to avoid this moment, or decline his presence at the coronation. Ironically, his son Archie will celebrate his 4th birthday on May 6, 2023. Saved by the bell?
