Football world champions in court in January

Benjamin Mendy will face several indicted charges in early January. The French soccer world champion has been in custody for around two weeks – and will have to stay there beforehand.

Benjamin Mendy will be tried on January 24th next year for alleged rape in England. This is reported by the French news agency AFP. The 27-year-old, who is currently in custody in Liverpool, is charged with rape in four cases and one other sexual assault. The incidents are said to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021, one of the alleged victims was a minor.

Mendy only gave his personal details at the court hearing on Friday. His attorney Eleanor Laws announced a motion to dismiss for another hearing on November 15. A 40-year-old man is co-accused. “The allegations relate to three plaintiffs over the age of 16 and are said to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021,” Cheshire police wrote in a statement. “The Cheshire police and prosecutors want to remind everyone that the criminal case against Mendy is still ongoing and that he has a right to a fair trial,” local police said.

Mendy was suspended from his club Manchester City about two weeks ago. “The matter is under legal action and the club may do not issue further comments until this process is completed“, City said. A court in Chester, England also rejected an application last week to release the professional on bail in advance of the trial. The footballer was in 2017 for an estimated 52 million pounds (around 60 Million euros) from AS Monaco to Manchester, in 2018 Mendy became world champion with the French national team.
