These 7 Instagram accounts speak openly about mental health problems
Perfect looks, perfect furnishings, perfect food: perfect life? The seemingly Instagram world can really pull your self-confidence. But more and more accounts are countering this and writing about mental health and mental illness.
A very nice trend can recently be observed on Instagram: There are more and more accounts devoted to the topic of mental health. Why is that so important? This gives people a face to mental illnesses and destigmatizes them.
The result is a great community that exchanges ideas; those affected feel less alone with their thoughts. Nevertheless: These seven accounts cannot replace professional help and therapy. They only provide a first point of reference and first aid for those affected and their relatives.
1. The Depression Chronicles: Education and Tips for Depression
Author Shelly-Ann Shaw explains on the_depression_chronicles11 about the different forms of depression and provides valuable help for those affected and their families. Each post is devoted to a special topic in a loving way.
For example, the blogger gives tips on how to deal with depressed men and anxiety patients or lets those affected have a say and tell what they have learned from their illness. Some content also helps sufferers to better understand their depression and themselves.
2. Freunde fürs Leben e.V .: destigmatization of mental illnesses
Diana Doko and Gerald Schömbs founded the registered association "Freund fürs Leben" over 19 years ago. Their goal: to educate and de-stigmatize about depression, mental health and suicide in order to take away the fear of talking about their illness. They have been continuing this great work on their Instagram channel @freundefuerslebenev since 2016.
3. Anke Glaßmeyer: Psychological online counseling
As a professional psychotherapist, Anke Glaßmeyer provides information about various therapy options on her Instagram channel @diepsychotherapeutin. Under the hashtag "therapiesecrets" she shares experiences from her everyday life as a therapist or gives tips for those affected in dealing with their illness.
4. Mental Health Crowd: Make mental illnesses visible
On @mentalhealthcrowd Dominique speaks openly about her borderline illness and shares important information for other sufferers. As the official Mental Health Advocate, she also has Germany's first Mental Health Café "Berg & Mental" opens in Munich.
5. Gina: Living with Depression and Eating Disorders
For several years, Gina has been giving intimate insights into her life with depression and eating disorders on Instagram (@ gini.eat.world). She speaks openly about her illnesses, her low points, what moves her and what has helped her. A great example that other sufferers can see that they are not alone with their problems and can exchange ideas in the comments.
6. Anna: Mental health packed in lyrical form
One sinks into Anna's texts. The student who lives in Berlin writes beautiful poems on @annabridfiedler about her life, but also about mental health. In doing so, she manages to bring psychological problems concisely to the point in lyrical short texts.
7. Charlotte: The struggle with your own body
Charlotte currently lives and studies in Bremen. She writes on Instagram @charliecarlsson about everyday thoughts and mental health. One intimate problem in particular has recently met with a lot of encouragement: your difficult love triangle with yourself, your body and food – a big problem that affects many people.
Charlotte represents an important message that everyone should stick to the fridge: "Food is your friend, not your enemy."
