Merging – Three nursing schools become one

The three Vorarlberg nursing schools are now united under one roof, the Vorarlberg Nursing School. The locations remain the same, administration is carried out centrally.

State Councilor Martina Rüscher and Dornbirn Mayor Andrea Kaufmann described the merger of the three Vorarlberg nursing schools into a single “Vorarlberg Nursing School” as a “great success” and “great milestone” on Monday from the hospital operating company (KHBG), the previous sponsor of the Rankweil and Feldkirch schools, and the city of Dornbirn, the owner of the third nursing training center in Bregenz. Since the beginning of January, the three schools have not only been under one management, the curricula have also been standardized. The three locations will remain in place, but according to the new head of the umbrella organization, Mario Wölbitsch, a major advantage of the “bundling of forces” is the bundling of the teaching staff and the possibility of being able to react “quickly and relatively unbureaucratically” to market requirements. “In other words, whether and when we start which training course.” In addition, the locations are to have different focal points in the future not from the merger. “They only exist in theory, practically – with the new training branches – we will probably need more money,” the headmaster also alludes to the nursing apprenticeship that is still in the room. This opinion is also shared by the health minister. It promises further financial resources for conversions or new branches of training for the coming years. There will be no more new diploma courses at the nursing school from 2024. So far, nursing assistants, nursing assistants and qualified nurses have been trained at the nursing schools – the schools are currently attended by around 300 people. However, the era of diploma courses at nursing schools is coming to an end. From 2024, the training for the higher nursing service can only be started at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences. The first new training branch “surgical technical assistance”, i.e. specialists who are to support the operating room, will start in May. 20 people applied for the ten places.
