After a few years of waiting, Meta’s messaging service is becoming more secure, just before the end of the year.

When it comes to communicating confidentially, which messaging service do you turn to? Telegram? Signal? WhatsApp ? If the latter’s membership in Mark Zuckerberg’s firm gives it less credibility compared to more independent players, it remains significantly more secure than Messenger. Indeed, its “sister” application has sorely lacked adequate encryption for (too?) many years.

Well, that was before.

End-to-end encryption being deployed

We’ve been talking about end-to-end encryption for conversations on Messenger for a while now. This summer, Meta reminded us that the feature was in development and assured us that it would arrive by 2024. Guess what? We are almost in 2024, and the promise has been kept.

Indeed, the American company has just announced that this encryption is being deployed worldwide. No need to activate anything, conversations will automatically and gradually be affected by this change. A process that will take time “, but we are no longer a few days or weeks away.

According to Loredana Crisan, vice president of Messenger, no functionality of the service will be sacrificed. Themes, reactions, ephemeral messages… everything remains there, as if nothing had happened. Except that Meta will no longer have access to your conversations, and will therefore not be able, for example, to transfer them to a government actor, as was the case last year.

Good news for billions of users

This took years to come to fruition because we took our time to get it right », Explains Crisan in a press release. “ Our engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts, and product managers have worked tirelessly to rebuild Messenger’s features from the ground up. » Will this be enough to enhance the application’s reputation? Certainly, even if those who are primarily looking for a secure messaging service will probably always pass up.

However, it is one of the most widely used services of this type in the world, and Meta has really taken a good step forward for all its users. Especially since they will not be the only ones, since messages on Instagram should undergo the same treatment in the weeks or months to come. At least, if we are to believe the statements made by the American giant this summer.

Please note, however: group conversations on Messenger will not be affected by end-to-end encryption for the moment. It remains to be seen, therefore, when this is planned.
