Mark Zuckerberg gave a short demonstration of the Cambria project, based on the Presence platform, taking care to hide the device itself well.
Last fall, Meta introduced its Presence platform. It is a mixed reality experience allowing users to integrate virtual objects and interact with them in a real environment.
To date, Quest headsets can only display the real world in shades of gray, making the experience uncomfortable over long use and above all a little less immersive. To overcome this, Meta unveiled Project Cambria.
A new high-end headset for virtual reality
Meta has released an overview video of Project Cambria, summarizing both the features of Presence and the differences brought by the new hardware. The main one is the use of a high definition sensor to display the real world with better resolution, but especially in color.
The company also released a video on Instagram showing Marc Zuckerberg trying out the product. No information on the hardware part has been provided, and even the aesthetics of the helmet remains secret, it having been blurred in the video.
The entire SDK containing Presence Tools, AI Passthrough, Spatial Anchors and Scene, Interaction and Voice SDKs as well as Hand Tracking API will be released next week .
When the virtual invites itself into the real
With this project, Meta intends to advance the metaverse a little more. The demonstration of the virtual world coexisting with our real world is called “The Wold Beyond” and developers will soon have access to it.
But the possibilities for this kind of application are enormous and the only limit will be our imagination. We have seen for example that mixed reality can be used to share a workspace with people who cannot be physically present or to increase productivity by organizing a virtual office with as many screens as necessary.
Mixed reality also makes it possible to share convivial moments like the game of chess in the presentation video, or completely fun and quirky with the appearance of a telephone booth when receiving a call.
Project Cambria is scheduled for release this year.
