Meta Quest 2: it’s the crisis, the VR headset will increase in price!

Generally, during the life cycle of a product, it gradually drops in price, as the technologies it embeds become more accessible. Rare and strange fact, Meta decided to do the opposite with its Meta Quest 2, whose selling price will be increased, 2 years after its release.

Thus, in the United States, the virtual reality helmet will pass from $299.99 to $399.99 in the 128 GB version, and from $399.99 to $499.99 in the 256 GB version. Meta justifies himself by explaining that his manufacturing and shipping costs have increased and that he wants to reassess his prices so that he can continue to invest heavily in the research of future technologies. Charging players for technologies not yet available is rare, while most manufacturers generally invest in a product before selling it to recover their health. Let’s just hope it’s not a way to ride the high demand around the Meta Quest 2regularly out of stock for a few months…

To pass the pill, the classic Beat Saber will nevertheless be offered to all those who buy a helmet VR between August 1 and December 31, 2022, and will activate it before January 31, 2023, provided the game is not already linked to their account.

The momentum of VR is undeniable. From games to productivity to fitness and beyond, virtual reality has become increasingly popular as it positively impacts the way we work, play and connect with each other. People have spent over $1 billion on Meta Quest apps, helping to fuel developer business as they deliver the games and experiences that make VR great.

At the same time, the costs of manufacturing and shipping our products have increased. By adjusting the price of Quest 2, we can continue to increase our investment in groundbreaking research and the development of new products that push the virtual reality industry to new heights.

We have an ambitious roadmap for VR hardware, starting with the launch of our premium headset, Project Cambria, later this year. And we plan to ship new generations of Meta Quest after that. At Reality Labs Research, we have teams dedicated to advancing technologies in VR displays, audio, incredibly realistic avatars, haptics, wrist interfaces, and more. And on the content front, we have a solid lineup of exciting titles coming to Meta Quest 2, including Ghostbusters VR, Among Us VR, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution, BONELAB, and NFL PRO ERA— The first officially licensed VR NFL game.

Even with these price changes, Meta Quest 2 continues to be the most affordable VR headset with a comparable feature set on the market. And every helmet keeps getting better after purchase. From Hand Tracking and Air Link enhancements to Meta Horizon Home, we’re constantly adding new features to make VR more social, intuitive, and immersive than ever. We will continue to ship exciting new software updates to improve our products regularly.

Now is the right time for us to redouble our efforts to advance technologies. We’ll continue to work alongside the developers, early adopters, and hardcore fans who play and build for VR every day, and we look forward to continuing to share the work we’re doing at Reality Labs on the road to the metaverse. .

In France, where the helmet is worth €349.99 or €449.99 depending on the model, we do not yet officially know if the price will be increased, but it is difficult to think that we will escape an increase of 50 or even 100 euros per device.
