Meta Quest 3: full body tracking is planned for soon but with a but can be annoying!

Here we are, after you have it teased at length and breadth in recent years (here, here and here), Full body tracking is now ripe enough to be integrated into Meta Quest 3 soonthe biggest upheaval to come since the advent of hand tracking (hand tracking).

The Meta Quest 3 should benefit from full body tracking via an update next December. If this is possible, it is because the side cameras of the helmet are able to follow the shoulder, torso, elbows and wrists. This technology, which is called Inside-Out Body Tracking (body tracking inside and outside, IOBT) will be exclusive to the Meta Quest 3 system (for obvious material reasons). We are therefore no longer, as before, estimating the position of our body in relation to those of our hands and our head (IK).

Concerning leg tracking, this will however be well compatible with all recent Quest systems (Quest 2 & Quest Pro). Unlike theIOBTthis will be an estimation by a “state-of-the-art” AI model, taking the upper body as an entry point. Generative Legacy (GL) will arrive in the same period as theIOBT.

GL Meta Quest 3

Meta proved to us during its Connect 2023 that it was now possible to link speed and artificial intelligence, without forgetting its possible integration into the gamingwe can only welcome the initiative! You will now be able to dodge balloons in VR (Dodge Arcade), handle your weapons “like in real“(Swordsman VR), and much more. This may well become the strong point and exclusivity of the next Meta Quest 3, like the PSVR 2 who has that of HDR and cutting-edge haptic feedback.

A small downside to note though, leg tracking, being based on an estimation of positions, will not integrate some of your movements (raise knees, cross legs, move only foot) but the main thing is : jumping, dodging, crouching, boxing, cricket, table tennis (all without compromising precision). We hope, however, that the leg tracking is good enough to finally allow us to shoot a ball, or move around in-game while hovering.

THE Full Body Synthesis (IOBT + GL) will be compatible (and exclusive to Meta Quest 3) from its launch with Swordsman VRSupernatural and Drunkn Bar Fight. THE SDK will be available to other developers at the same time.
