Meta Quest 3: the technical director of Meta answers many questions

In WADA (Ask Me Anything or “ask me what you want”), Andrew Bosworth, Technical Director at Metaanswered most of the questions posed by his followersthe perfect opportunity to summarize his words and learn more about the latest addition to the firm.

  • Can we wear glasses with the Meta Quest 3?
His answer is “yes”. He explains that the helmet, much thinner than its predecessor, should provide significant comfort. If it seems credible, it will never equal additional corrective lenses to attach to the helmet.
  • Does the helmet properly cover the entire face?
Andrew Bosworth clarified that the black part corresponds to the facial interface and that its dimensions would be determined by the size of a human face. We bet that non-standard morphologies will be able to use the new helmet without any problems. Meta. Regarding the possible replacement of the facial interfaces, it says he likes the idea, though he’s currently unaware of how to do it.

  • How are Meta Quest 3 controllers (which don’t have rings) tracked?
THE Meta Quest 3 tracks both the player’s hands as well as the LEDs infrared arranged on the joystick. It is by combining these data points that it would be possible to obtain precise tracking, without resorting to the expensive technology of the integrated cameras of the Meta Quest Pro or bulky rings of the Meta Quest 2. Also note that players will be able to use the controllers of the Meta Quest Pro on the Meta Quest 3. According to the first feedback from Bloombergthe monitoring of controllers would currently be less effective than on Meta Quest 2 Or Pro, but it seems that the software part is not yet fully optimized. Since then, it has been said that the controllers of the Meta Quest 3 have passed the test Beat Saber in fashion Expert+. To be continued then.

  • THE FOV is it wider than on Meta Quest 2 or Pro?
Bad news for those who thought the FOV was already quite small compared to a PSVR 2 or one Meta Quest Prothe field of vision will be substantially the same as that of the Meta Quest 2 (about 100°).

  • What about the autonomy of the Meta Quest 3?
Good news, the autonomy of the Meta Quest 3 will be the same as that of Meta Quest 2, i.e. between 2 and 3 hours. As a reminder, when it comes out and in real condition, the Quest 2 oscillated rather between 2h and 2h30 depending on the software used, and much more if you used the profiles battery-saving of our solution Quest Games Optimizer.

  • Is Meta Quest 3 heavier than Meta Quest 2?
Surprisingly, the weight of Meta Quest 3 is about the same, but the feeling is different. The thinness of the helmet plays a lot on the comfort of use. The new design of the strap, the fact that the visor is closer to the face contributes greatly to the ergonomics of the helmet.

  • Can the Meta Quest 3 use the Link ?
THE Meta Quest 3 can use Quest Link And Bosworth said that the PC VR still has an important part in the gaming. The technical director of Meta outbid by describing the Quest 3 as “best in class for all PC gaming needs VR “.

  • What are the main differences between Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest Pro
Andrew Bosworth returns to the depth sensor which, if it was initially planned for the Meta Quest Pro, was withdrawn at the end of the development cycle, as it was considered incidental with regard to color and infrared cameras. This removal of the sensor has notably reduced the cost, weight and heat of the helmet. Funny thing, mirrors have been added to prevent infrared cameras from Meta Quest Pro to see through clothing. If the Meta Quest 3 sports a depth sensor, this is essentially due to the fact that the company has more perspective on this technology and that it has improved enough in a year, at least enough to be much more relevant on this model of helmet. View pass-through of Quest 3 is much higher than that of Meta Quest Pro. However, it seems that gray flashes appear when the hands move quickly due to the new colorization mode of the pass-through.

Our opinion

We can only appreciate the answers provided by the technical director of Metaalthough we can only recommend that you take some (the less objective) information with a grain of salt. On performance, we are not more advanced, the Meta Quest 3 would be able to display high definition graphics without dropping frames, we only ask to believe it, as it is true that the games shown during the Meta Showcase Gaming bear witness to an undeniable graphic gap. What is certain is that we can’t wait to get our hands on this Meta Quest 3 to give you our first impressions, so one piece of advice, stay tuned.
