Meta Quest Pro: no depth sensor, contrary to what Mark Zuckerberg announced

Last May, Mark Zuckerberg said that the helmet codenamed cambria would have a depth sensor. He had also mentioned that the Meta Quest 2 did not have one, thus speaking of “do-it-yourself”, but that the Meta Quest Pro would have one and that this would lead to a more optimized detection for the hands.

Our colleagues fromUploadVR were able to get their hands on the helmet and searched through the diagrams the depth sensor, but never managed to find it. By questioning Metathe company replied:

The Meta Quest Pro uses forward-facing cameras to measure depth in your surroundings. It works with 3D reconstruction algorithms to render your physical surroundings in your headset via passthrough.

Whatever, hand tracking works much better on the Meta Quest Pro than the Meta Quest 2the reasons are simple: the front-facing cameras have four times the pixels of its big brother, and the hand tracking 2.0 and the artificial intelligence associated with it must work many more miracles on the latest headset from Meta than that of the previous generation.

It is now possible (via current technologies) that a depth sensor is no longer “strictly” necessary. Devices with depth sensors like theHolo Lens 2 or theiPad Pro can automatically scan your room to generate a mesh of the walls and furniture in it, so that virtual objects appear behind or on top of real objects. This is crucial to convince of mixed or augmented reality, let’s hope that the technology linked to Meta Quest Pro does as well!

Currently, Mixed Reality on Meta Quest Pro requires manually marking your walls, ceiling, and furniture, just like its big brother. It is an arduous process that the results are imperfectwhich adds significant friction to the adoption of mixed reality.

Rest assured, Meta is studying the possibility of automatically detecting plansi.e. flat surfaces such as walls and tables, but clarified that this feature would not be available when the Meta Quest Pro is launched.

If the Meta Quest 2 still interests you, know that you can always afford it at the Fnac, Darty or Amazon for €449.99. You can also find good PCs for gamers on the site.
