Meta Quest V40: Dubbed by Meta the Big 4-0, this update brings security and privacy protection (don’t laugh!)

Each new update brings its share of novelty and the red thread of this V40 (Big 4-0 according to Meta) is security and privacy. On the program, the possibility of locking applications, the return of online payment for purchases from the headset VRadding new keyboards tracked augmented reality, new audio settings and end-to-end encryption of our conversations in Messenger. Note, it seems that this new firmware closes the door to many Android features, including background running of unofficial – but not illegal – apps like HQ, pi launcher, etc. If you want to know more about this subject, we talked about it here. You understood, behind the sequins, there is cleaning to block independent developers and their very nice applications.

  • Individual app lock
Since V31, Meta had introduced the possibility of locking access to the Meta Quest headset through a scheme of our choice (like on a smartphone). This first step did not block a particular application and this could be a concern if your children were to use your headphones. This is now corrected and the V40 brings this possibility. Note, with the arrival of the Metaverse, Meta is working on setting up parental supervision tools that will be available in the coming months. As a reminder, the use of Meta Quest helmets for children under the age of thirteen is prohibited (the collection of data on minors under this age is prohibited by American law).

  • Secure payment finally available
You have probably noticed that payment by credit card via the VR headset had become impossible for some of us and we had to go through the smartphone application or the website. Of course, Meta had not communicated on the subject, but the reason was simply the incompatibility of their collection system with 3D Secure security. From now on, it exists and it will allow you to pay directly without taking off your helmet. However, developers must register to activate 3DS support for in-app purchases, which suggests that this may not be possible for all games. To be continued…

  • More recognized keyboards in AR
Last year, the ability to use a real keyboard to type text while in the headset was added. At that time, only Logitech’s K830 was compatible via Bluetooth. Meanwhile, the V37 had brought compatibility with the Apple Magic Keyboard without a numeric keypad. The V40 recognizes three new keyboards: the Apple Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad, the Logitech K375s and MX Keys. A “Manage Saved Keyboards” section is now available in the Settings menu to track keyboard models and make adjustments.

  • New audio features
The Accessibility tab in the Settings menu gets a new Mono Audio option that lets you hear the same audio from the left and right headphones speakers (or from the headphone jack) over the default spatial audio effect. It is also possible to adjust the balance of the left and right audio channels in order to better “center” the sound for people with one ear less efficient than the other.

  • End-to-end encryption of Messenger conversations
V40 brings end-to-end encryption (optional) for one-to-one Messenger messages and calls in VR.
