Meta Quest: V50 will bring touch control, body tracking and improved passthrough

There V50 arrives, bringing its share of novelties! To begin with, we will be given the possibility to control the interface of our Meta Quest pressing it, as if we were doing it from a touchscreen. In a second time, lines of code would mention the body tracking. Finally, the Meta Quest Pro will have an update for sound correction pass-through. It seems certain that as we approach the PSVR 2 and VIVE XR Elite, Meta work twice as hard to make its innovations a reality… it was about time!

You touch or you point ?

Where we were used to pointing the remote interface, there V50 offers to touch the panels with your fingers, as if you were doing it on your smartphone or tablet. Of course, if touching “in the void” may surprise at first glance, we do it commonly in games. VRwhether with or without a controller.

Meta is still aware that some users would like to get haptic feedback, as some people do when pressing their touch keyboard. In this perspective, he has recently acquired a company specializing in haptics. If this were to materialize, it would be a bombshell in the world of virtual reality.especially since hand tracking has been significantly improved in its latest version.

For the moment, it takes a little time to adapt. Moreover, it is strongly recommended to use only one of your two hands to navigate the interface, otherwise you will multiply the missteps. Another important element, we cannot (at the moment), like a smartphone, zoom in or zoom out the page or menu we are reading. Finally, and fortunately, it will be possible to deactivate or not this new control system.

Body tracking

Discovered by deliciouspotato2 (You can not make that up), body and therefore leg tracking should soon be available for our Meta Quests.

We talked about this in a previous article, full body tracking would not only be amazing, but would be a really big highlight for a Meta Quest 2 at the end of the race and a Meta Quest 3 which would only have the extra power, depth sensor (for mixed reality) and lenses pancakes for him.

Meta Quest Pro passthrough goes from very good to excellent

Eh yes, there V50 makes it possible to make an important correction to the famous pass-through Meta Quest Pro which was always a good notch below the PICO 4 and which did not allow until then to be able to read through the helmet. From now on, the cards are reshuffled with this new deal:

Vision through (from excellent to very good): VIVE XR Elite > Meta Quest Pro > PICO 4.

The VIVE XR Elite has a pass-through as sharp and precise as if you were putting on your glasses, with peripheral deformations which are really minimal. In other words, he will always come out the winner of this fight, even against a Meta Quest Pro.

However, things need to be recontextualized. : THE VIVE XR Elite came out long after Meta Quest Pro and the latter is much more expensive than a PICO 4. In other words, each helmet has, in its price range (apart from a Meta Quest 2 and a PSVR 2) of a pass-through more than comfortable.

Finally, we recall for all intents and purposes that at Metagetting the latest version does not mean that you will have all the features ! And to understand why and how, we invite you to read our dedicated article.

If you haven’t taken the plunge yet, you can treat yourself to a Meta Quest 2 to the Fnac, Darty Or Amazon from €449.99.
