Meta has started to alert owners of its VR headsets of the permanent deletion of Oculus accounts. Those who have not yet migrated their data to Meta only have one month left to do so.
Meta, which was then called Facebook, bought Oculus VR in 2014 for $2 billion. Since then, the company has worked to further tie this division to its other products, for example by requiring owners of Quest headsets to log in from a Facebook account.
In 2022, the company added the ability to create a Meta account, providing an alternative to users refusing to link their Facebook account to their headset. They have not been able to log into their Oculus accounts since January 2023, and these devices will now be officially removed, Meta warns.
Deleting Oculus accounts
The company sent an email to all affected users, asking them to migrate their Oculus account to a Meta account before March 29, the date on which all Oculus profiles will be eliminated.
Latecomers will no longer be able to reactivate or recover their applications, in-app purchases, store credits, etc. They will lose all their progress, their friends lists as well as all content created via the Oculus account.
As a reminder, virtual and augmented realities are among Meta’s biggest bets, with the company having invested several billion dollars in what it considers to be the future iteration of the Internet, the metaverse. Efforts which are, for the moment, not paying off. In recent months, Mark Zuckerberg seems to favor artificial intelligence (AI).
How to migrate to a Meta account?
Migrating your Oculus account to a Meta account is a fairly simple process. The company suggests going to a site where you can create a Meta account with the same email as the one linked to Oculus. From there, you will be able to access all data, games, and other purchases saved to your Oculus account.
Meta marketed the Meta Quest 3, its latest mixed reality headset, on October 10 (a headset that we have also tested here, in our columns). It directly competes with the Apple Vision Pro, which is not yet available outside the United States.
