After the launch of chatbots like ChatGPT or Bard, AI which have established themselves as the most fashionable tech products of 2023, the giants of the sector have started to revise their ambitions upwards. Thus, beyond the future GPT-5 update, OpenAI has already embarked on research into “artificial general intelligence”, an AI whose cognitive abilities would be similar to those of humans. A project in which Google is also involved… just like Meta!
Meta, a competitor to OpenAI
The future in AI will go much further than just our chatbots. Because more and more tech giants want to develop this famous “artificial general intelligence”, a dystopian technology that could create a rival to humanity. The latest competitor to have come forward is Meta, through a communication from Mark Zuckerberg himself, posted on Instagram.
Meta thus wishes to develop “ general artificial intelligence […] in open source, and make it widely available so that everyone can benefit from it. » To do this, several changes have been implemented by the Californian group. A merger between its two teams specializing in this field, FAIR (Fundamental AI Research) and GenAI, was thus notably decided.
350,000 H100 chips ordered from Nvidia
More importantly, Meta will place a mega-order from Nvidia to acquire 350,000 H1 chips, the most powerful AI chips in the world, by the end of the year. According to the Menlo Park firm’s press release, the entire IT infrastructure for the development of AI at Meta will then have a power equivalent to 600,000 H1 chips.
However, Mark Zuckerberg denies that this announcement marks a move away from major investment in the metaverse, presented in 2021 as the group’s main axis of development for the years to come. “ I don’t know how to state more clearly that we continue to focus on Reality Labs and the metaverse » he insisted in an interview with The Verge. Should we take his word for it, when layoffs at Reality Labs were announced last fall, and losses are piling up? As of today, the Metaverse still represents nearly $15 billion in spending per year for Meta. And tomorrow ?
