Meta: you will finally be able to physically play in the same room

Colocation allows multiple headsets to share the same physical play space. Meta (at the time named Facebook) showed a prototype “on a real scale” with the famous game Dead and Buried end of 2018, but without repeating the experience with other titles.

Used in arcades VRthe VIVE Focus 3 already supports this location system since last year. Collocation should be the sine qua non of mixed reality applications in the future, if only to ensure that everyone can observe the same virtual objects or avatars in the same room. This technology will perhaps allow (and it is all the good that we wish them) to restore interest in arcades VRincreasingly challenged by the porting of their experiences on Steam (After-H, VR spread).

You know the Guardian of Meta and you know that your helmet analyzes the environment to offer you the different protection zones that you have created at home, preventing you from wasting your time redoing one each time you turn on the helmet. Well, know that it’s about the same for the roommate, but more advanced since the elements can be mobile. Cherry on the cake, the process does not require any external sensor or specific markingas it is usually done (ex: the rooms EVA).

This is a technology that, from a developer’s perspective, will require applications to specifically support it. the Guardian uses the “Spatial Anchors” function, while colocation uses “Shared Spatial Anchors” to place virtual content in a specific location in the room and share it with other players.

If the Meta Quest 2 still interests you, know that you can always afford it at the Fnac, Darty or Amazon for €449.99. You can also find good PCs for gamers on the site.
