Meta’s Messenger app will become as secure as WhatsApp

Facebook’s instant messaging application wants to provide more protection to its users’ conversations. The Meta group (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp) announced through the voice of the boss of Messenger, Loredana Crisan, the end-to-end encryption of messages sent.

This security mode, called E2EE, guarantees complete protection of exchanges between users and prevents any outside person from knowing its content. Thus, your discussion becomes completely confidential, to the point that even Meta cannot have access to it.

Messenger has already offered end-to-end encryption since 2016 as an option available in the application settings, but the group founded by Mark Zuckerberg has assured that it will gradually apply by default to all users. A promise already made last year which, this time, is coming true.

Messenger is therefore finally aligned with other instant messaging applications such as Signal, Olvid or even WhatsApp, which benefited from end-to-end encryption by default two years after its acquisition by Meta, in 2014.

This long-awaited update is accompanied by new features such as the possibility of modifying messages up to 15 minutes after sending them, deactivating acknowledgments of receipt, or even the transmission of ephemeral messages and photos in high definition .

All these new features, including default message encryption, will be deployed in the coming months. Users eligible to benefit will be notified via a notification on their device.
