A judicial inquiry has been opened in Mexico after a few-month-old bear cub was lynched to death by residents of a town in the northwest of the country. The young animal of an endangered species had approached the village to look for water. The alleged perpetrators risk “a prison sentence or a fine”.

A bear cub was lynched to death by the inhabitants of a locality in northwestern Mexico where it had approached to look for water, prompting the opening of a judicial investigation and the filing of a criminal complaint in addition to the anger of the defenders of the animal cause. “They are suffocating, trampling, tying and killing a black bear,” environmental defender Arturo Islas Allende warned on Facebook in a post shared 20,000 times on Tuesday and commented on more than 5,000 times.

His message is published with photos, which coincide with a video where we see the black bear cub lying on the ground, the paws attached. “Barely four months old, this cub is treated worse than the worst criminals,” adds the environmental defender, situating the scene in the locality of CastaƱos, in the state of Coahuila.

“His only fault was to approach the village in search of a little water,” he adds, accusing the police present of having done nothing.

A complaint filed against the authors

The governor, Miguel Riquelme, condemned the death of the black bear and announced the opening of an investigation since it is an endangered species. “The black bear is the living symbol of conservation in Coahuila. We must all respect its life and environment,” the governor added.

The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office for the Environment (Profepa) has announced the filing of a criminal complaint against the perpetrators of the attack, speaking of an “aggression against biodiversity”. The alleged perpetrators risk “a prison sentence or a fine”, added Profepa.
