Mexico: investigation and complaint after the lynching of a bear cub

A bear cub was lynched to death by the inhabitants of a locality in northwestern Mexico where it had approached to look for water, prompting the opening of a judicial investigation and the filing of a criminal complaint in addition to the anger of the defenders of the animal cause.

“They suffocate, trample, tie up and kill a black bear”, alerted environmental defender Arturo Islas Allende on Facebook in a message shared 20,000 times on Tuesday and commented on more than 5,000 times. His message is published with photos, which coincide with a video where we see the black bear cub lying on the ground, the paws attached. “Barely four months old, this cub is treated worse than the worst criminals”adds the defender of the environment, situating the scene in the locality of Castaños, in the state of Coahuila. “His only fault was approaching the village in search of a little water”he adds, accusing the police present of having done nothing.

The governor, Miguel Riquelme, condemned the death of the black bear and announced the opening of an investigation since it is an endangered species. “The black bear is the living symbol of conservation in Coahuila. We must all respect his life and his environment., added the governor. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office for the Environment (Profepa) has announced the filing of a criminal complaint against the perpetrators of the attack, speaking of a “attack on biodiversity”. The alleged perpetrators risk “imprisonment or a fine”added the Profepa.
